It's largely believed and often repeated that she is the daughter of Diego Arias de Sotelo and Leonor Valderrama de Moctezuma.

However, some people believe she may instead has been the daughter of Leonor Cortez Moctezuma, who is the daughter of Isabel Moctezuma and Hernan Cortes. There are others who believe she may have descended from one of Moctezuma's brothers.

One way or another, her ancestral connection to the Moctezuma name was documented during her lifetime and not simply claimed after death.

Very few primary sources from this era still exist, and the connection is not proven, but it is the general agreed-upon consensus.
